About MH Vatavaran
25 years of MHVatavaran
Founded in 1998, MH Vatavaran, the Environment Society of Miranda House, draws inspiration from the visionary environmentalist Dr. Iqbal Malik and her organization Vatavaran. Dr. Malik's dedication and motivation spurred the creation of our society, providing a platform for the entire Miranda House community—students, faculty, and non-teaching staff—to unite under a shared concern for the environment. Our society empowers students to voice their stance on environmental issues, bolster their arguments, and take meaningful action.
Miranda House has pioneered the transformation of its campus into a Zero Solid Waste Zone, marked by the recycling of paper, biodegradable waste, and plastic. These green initiatives extend to the Miranda Tech Park, where paper recycling and organic waste composting occur on a regular basis.
The paper recycling plant within the tech park takes discarded paper and transforms it into elegant notebooks and paper bags. These items are showcased and sold at various events, including the annual Diwali Mela, 'Onella.' This endeavor began as a Department of Science & Technology (DST) project in 2004, and with support from Delhi Govt, it evolved to a larger scale. The current recycling plant was made possible through a generous contribution by Dr. Urvashi Dhamija from the Political Science Department. The composting facility was later integrated into the plant.
In 2019, the MH Vatavaran Union embarked on an innovative journey to cultivate a plastic bottle garden. Plants like Catharanthus, Roses, Arrowhead plants (known as Sadabahar), and Money plants flourished in a soilless medium.
Beyond these commendable efforts, our society has undertaken initiatives such as Anti-Litter Campaigns post-university elections, cyclathons, and nature trails. In a recent session, our volunteers actively participated in ECHO 2020, a collaborative effort with WWF.
Together, as a community, we continue to foster a legacy of environmental stewardship, guided by the principles of MH Vatavaran. Our journey towards a sustainable future is fueled by our collective dedication, and we invite all to join us in making a meaningful impact on our world.
