Animal Testing (The story of Mice)

MH Vatavaran, the Environment Society of Miranda House in collaboration with AAVYA , presented a documentary “Dominion”, an Aussie Farms production under the Farms Transparency Project showcasing the horrors and barbaric, inhumane behavior meted out to the animals of dairy industry. Here's a brief report on one of the animals the documentary discusses about.

It’s well known that mice are the most commonly used animals for testing purposes in scientific researches and sometimes as pets also. But the ratio differs such that out of 6-10 million animals used in testing industries, 1-2 million are mice. Many a time they have to suffer through live surgical processes without any pain relief or exposure to toxins and then are ultimately killed as they cannot be released legally. There are two common ways of killing mice after they have delivered their cause, i.e. either overdose of carbon-di-oxide (at the rate of 1L/min.) or isoflurane gas.

In 2015, studies by the National Institute of Health in the United States states that 95% of the drugs which are predicted to be safe and unaffected on animal testing fails on human trials. This shows that animals are not the perfect models to be tested for human diseases. Hypertension, Diabetes, Cataracts, Obesity, Seizures, Respiratory problems, Deafness, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Cancer, Cystic fibrosis, HIV and AIDs, Heart disease, Muscular dystrophy, Spinal cord injuries are some examples of human disorders and diseases for which mice and rats are used as models.

Now being “Humans”, the most beautiful creation of God, it’s everyone’s responsibility to help these animals suffering in experimental testing.
