Commuting Alternatives: How to embrace Car Free Living

Have you ever tried to reduce the cause of traffic jam on the road? It is caused due to so many vehicles beeping out their horns so loud and disturbing other species co-existing with “Homo Sapiens”. We humans can’t live without commuting but only to buy some milk at a nearby store, a car is not needed. But that’s exactly today the world is doing.

It is being recognized internationally that private transit can be expensive and environment-harming as well releasing excess amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. So, every year on 22nd September, “Car FREE Day” is celebrated.

It is an international event celebrated in various cities and communities around the world.

It's typically a day when people are encouraged to leave their cars at home and instead use alternative and sustainable modes. The primary goal of Car-Free Day is to raise awareness about the environmental, health, and social benefits of reducing the use of private automobiles. It aims to promote sustainable urban mobility and reduce air pollution and traffic congestion.

We discuss here what all can be the alternatives to Private Vehicles. They can be:

Ø Walking: Walking is a simple, environmentally friendly, and healthy way to get around. It requires no special equipment, and it's free. Walking is best for short trips (you can buy milk this way).

Ø Bicycling: It is faster than walking and provides exercise. It is suitable for paths of moderate distances, running errands, and leisurely rides (which we used to do in childhood).

Ø Public Transit: It can include buses, trams, subways, and commuter trains. It's a convenient way to get around cities and metropolitan areas, reducing the need for private cars. It can be cost-effective too (Delhi Metro, you know😊)

Ø Carpooling and Ridesharing: Sharing rides with others reduces the no. of vehicles on the road, saving money and reducing traffic jam and emissions. It's particularly effective for longer travel. It can increase your social interaction also.

Ø Electric Bicycles (E-bikes): They provide an extra boost of power, making cycling easier, especially on hilly terrain or for longer distances. They offer the benefits of cycling with less physical effort and have no emissions as well.

Ø Telecommuting and Remote Work: Termed as working from home eliminates the need for a daily commute altogether. It is suitable for people whose work can be done at home like a software engineer.
