MH Vatavaran, the Environment Society of Miranda House in collaboration with AAVYA , presented a documentary “Dominion”, an Aussie Farms production under the Farms Transparency Project showcasing the horrors and barbaric, inhumane behavior meted out to the animals of dairy industry. Here's a brief report on one of the animals the documentary discusses about.
Exotic” often refers to a species which is not native or indigenous to the owner’s location. Exotic animals are used for scientific research and entertainment.
Entertainment
Animals are abused and exploited for a variety of forms of “entertainment.” In circuses and zoos, primates, elephants, lions, tigers, and other animals are held in captivity where they are released from extreme boredom of their cage only to perform for spectators in circuses or in Zoos. Animals kept in captivity are observed for various physiological signs and their behaviour. They were found to be affected by zoochosis.
In Tropical heat of Queensland, Sea world hosts Australia’s only captive polar bear which are naturally adapted for freezing Arctic conditions and have been found to swim over 70 km per day .But here they are confined with 30- 40 m enclosure for the entire life.
Scientific research
Primates such as macaques, baboons are provided annually to research labs by government funded breeding facilities. Hidden from public sight behind intensive security, these labs carry out a variety of biomedical experiments on these highly intelligent animals before discarding them.
Solution
People should be aware about the right of animals. They should understand that we are not the dominant species on the Earth and other species have equal right to live their life as they want. Animals are exploited for the sake of entertainment for a few hours but that makes the whole life of an animal a hell. Keeping animals in captivity can be compared to humans living their whole life in a closed room. They also suffer from behavioral changes.
People should stop taking part in entertainment in which animals are forcefully used. They should stop keeping exotic animals as their pet. For doing Scientific research, protocols provided should be followed like for testing ,first small animals such as rats are used with provided rules and protocols so that there is no pain and harm to them and then later on switching to larger animals such as primates should be done.
Experimental records should be shared with other labs so that every lab doesn't have to perform the same work already performed by other labs. Moreover, cell lines or other cellular or microfluidics systems should be preferred to perform certain experiments instead of the use of live animal systems. Government should make strict laws and punish citizens for exploitation of exotic animals. The punishment should be heavier than the profit they get from doing such illegal work. Government should make rules and laws in coordination with the other countries as well for reducing exotic animal smuggling and trafficking across the world.
As an individual whenever anybody finds any illegal exploitation of animals ,they should report it to the concerned authority.
