MH Vatavaran, the Environment Society of Miranda House; in collaboration with Hindustan
Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) conducted a walkathon to raise awareness on the
use of petroleum products.
This collaboration takes place every year. Despite the COVID-19 related fear and
restrictions, the event was successfully conducted this year too, strictly adhering to physical
distancing, sanitization and mask wearing guidelines.
Besides student volunteers of Miranda House, the walk was also joined in by professors
who led the students to the Khyber Pass Petrol Pump. They were greeted warmly by the
walkathon coordinator, who talked about the importance of cleaner fuels.
HPCL has also set up electric charging ports, realizing that as ‘cleaner fuels’ is a moving goal,
the future is electric. Students were familiarized with tests conducted to see how clean a
fuel is and to find out whether it is adulterated. They were also imparted with the
knowledge of their rights as drivers of two-wheelers and motor vehicles, for instance, the
right to get the tire pressure checked for free. A the end,, a pledge was taken where the
participants promised to use petroleum products judiciously and get others to do so too.
Volunteers were provided with white caps, T-shirts and ‘Saksham’ banners,
which they carried on their walk back to Miranda House. The students also carried two
banners carrying the society logo of MH Vatavaran, along with some handmade ones.
It was an enriching experience for all the participants and a break from the pandemic
related monotony of online events.
- The following report of the event is covered by Sanjwala Mukund (President, MH Vatavaran)
