Whale Shark Effect: How these creatures impact our Oceans

“The little whale shark wanted to reach for the stars, it didn’t yet know it carried so many on itself.”


Imagine a creature so vast, it could swallow a small car whole. Yet, this gentle giant is as harmless as a whale and as spotted as a leopard. It is the whale shark, the ocean's enigmatic plankton vacuum.These magnificent creatures play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of our oceans, earning them the title "ocean gardeners.” The whale shark’s scientific name is Rhincodon typus. It is the only member of the genus Rhincodon, which scientists class as its own family, though it is sometimes also classed under the Orectolobidae family (carpet sharks).Whale sharks are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, and their populations are currently decreasing. They face a range of threats, including vessel strikes, bycatch, fisheries, finning, tourism, and climate change. The maximum size of whale sharks is not known, but could be as large as 60 feet. Females give birth to live young but this has never been observed. Where pupping occurs and where the youngest animals situate remains a mystery, as they are very rarely found. Adults are often found feeding at the surface, but may dive to 1000m. Whale sharks are protected from fishing in many countries these days, but are in decline in some areas.
